About Cö shu Nie

Last updated:

Cö shu Nie are an Osaka-formed progressive rock band built around founding members Miku Nakamura (vocals, guitar, keyboards, manipulator) and Shunsuke Matsumoto (bass). Formed in February 2011, they spent seven years working independently before making their major-label debut through Sony Music in 2018 with ‘asphyxia’, the opening theme for Tokyo Ghoul:re. Manga creator Sui Ishida was involved in selecting the band for the series, and the song became their international breakthrough, eventually passing 100 million Spotify streams in 2025.

During their Sony period, Cö shu Nie expanded the technical, unpredictable rock of their early releases into a wider mix of progressive rock, electronic music, pop, and heavier guitar work. Their anime catalogue includes ‘Zettai Zetsumei’ and ‘Lamp’ for The Promised Neverland, ‘bullet’ and ‘red strand’ for PSYCHO-PASS 3, ‘give it back’ for Jujutsu Kaisen, and ‘MAISIE’ with HYDE for Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc. Albums PURE (2019), Flos Ex Machina (2022), and 7 Deadly Guilt (2024) pushed that range further. Drummer Ryosuke Fujita left in June 2021 after health problems made continued activity difficult, leaving Nakamura and Matsumoto to continue as a duo.

The band’s audience has increasingly extended beyond Japan. In 2023, Cö shu Nie headlined Anime Expo in Los Angeles and also appeared at Anime NYC, later adding appearances including Super Japan Expo in Chile and WONDERLIVET in South Korea, alongside headline shows elsewhere in Asia. In 2025, Nakamura and the band’s business partner Kaz Skellington founded independent label RVRNC, with Nakamura serving as co-representative director. Cö shu Nie began releasing through RVRNC with ‘I am the light’ in September 2025, followed in July 2026 by ‘SATURATED (in monochrome)’, a concept album the band described as their heaviest work to date.
