About Crystal Lake
Crystal Lake are a Tokyo metalcore band formed in 2002, with a history that stretches from Japan’s early-2000s hardcore scene to an international touring career across Asia, Europe, North America and Australia. Built around founding guitarist Yudai ‘YD’ Miyamoto, the band have gone through several distinct eras and vocalists while steadily expanding beyond Japan. Their catalogue runs from early hardcore-rooted releases such as ‘Dimension’ and ‘Into the Great Beyond’ through the internationally recognised Ryo Kinoshita era and albums including ‘The Sign’, ‘True North’ and ‘Helix’, to their current lineup fronted by Prompts vocalist PK.
The band were started by guitarist Shinya Hori, who placed a members-wanted advert in punk magazine DOLL after moving to Tokyo for university. YD was among those who responded, while original vocalist Kentaro Nishimura joined in early 2003. Crystal Lake began looking outside Japan almost immediately, travelling to South Korea within their first handful of shows and later building links with bands and promoters across the Asian hardcore scene.
Their early releases included the ‘Blood of Judas’ split in 2004 and a three-way split with Risen and Unboy the following year. A Malaysian tour followed before Crystal Lake released their debut album ‘Dimension’ in 2006, which took them on their first nationwide headline run. They spent the following years sharing stages with visiting overseas bands in Japan and toured with Parkway Drive and Shai Hulud in 2009 before releasing second album ‘Into the Great Beyond’ in 2010.
Nishimura left after the sold-out Into the Great Beyond tour final in 2011. Ryo Kinoshita joined the following year, alongside Gaku Taura initially coming into the band as a support drummer. Although Ryo became closely associated with Crystal Lake’s increasingly heavy sound, he later noted that the shift was already underway before he joined and that his own style fitted the direction the existing members were pursuing.
The ‘Cubes’ EP in 2014 brought Crystal Lake to a wider audience in Japan, followed by appearances at SUMMER SONIC and KNOTFEST JAPAN. ‘The Sign’ arrived in 2015 and became a key step in their international growth, with overseas releases through Artery Recordings in the United States and JPU Records in Europe. ‘True North’ followed in 2016, with Crystal Lake taking the album across Asia and embarking on their first European headline tour the following year. They also launched TRUE NORTH FESTIVAL in Tokyo in 2017.
‘Helix’ continued that expansion, receiving an international release through SharpTone Records in 2019 as Crystal Lake became increasingly established on touring circuits outside Japan. The band revisited their earlier catalogue with ‘The Voyages’ in 2020, re-recording songs from the pre-Ryo years and bringing Nishimura back as a guest on ‘The Passage’.
Hori left Crystal Lake later in 2020, leaving YD as the band’s sole remaining founder. Longtime support members Gaku and bassist Mitsuru were made official members in 2021, while former HER NAME IN BLOOD guitarist Hisatsugu ‘TJ’ Taji joined at the same time.
Kinoshita departed in 2022 after a decade as vocalist. Crystal Lake launched the public THE LIGHT audition to find his replacement, ultimately bringing in American vocalist John Robert Centorrino in 2023. The band subsequently signed with Century Media Records and released ‘The Weight of Sound’ on January 23rd, 2026, their first original album since ‘Helix’.
Centorrino left in March 2026 after the demands of Crystal Lake’s international touring schedule became increasingly difficult to balance with family life. Prompts vocalist PK initially stepped in for live dates before being confirmed as Crystal Lake’s new vocalist and a full member on August 21st.
The current lineup is PK on vocals, YD and TJ on guitars, Mitsuru on bass, and Gaku on drums.
