About Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

Last updated:

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is a Japanese pop singer and fashion figure who emerged from Tokyo’s Harajuku street fashion scene, initially gaining attention as a model and blogger before pursuing music. Born Kiriko Takemura, she made her major-label debut in August 2011 with the mini-album ‘Moshi Moshi Harajuku’, produced by Yasutaka Nakata of electronic duo CAPSULE, also known for his work with Perfume. Its lead track, ‘PONPONPON’, became an international viral hit, helped by a surreal music video filled with oversized props, grotesque imagery, and colourful fashion. The contrast between cute and unsettling visuals became central to Kyary’s identity, bringing elements of Harajuku’s decora and kawaii subcultures to audiences far beyond Japan.

Her debut album, ‘Pamyu Pamyu Revolution’ (2012), reached No. 1 on Oricon’s daily album chart, while singles including ‘Tsukematsukeru’, ‘Fashion Monster’, and ‘Ninja Re Bang Bang’ established her as a major figure in Japanese pop. Albums ‘Nanda Collection’ (2013) and ‘Pika Pika Fantajin’ (2014) continued her partnership with Nakata, combining synthesiser-heavy dance music with elaborate costumes, choreography, and increasingly theatrical live productions. Kyary made her UK debut at London’s O2 Academy Islington in February 2013 during her first world tour, which visited 13 cities across eight countries and regions. She went on to complete five world tours, alongside appearances at major Japanese venues including Nippon Budokan and repeated performances on NHK’s annual Kohaku Uta Gassen television programme.

Following her fourth album, ‘Japamyu’ (2018), Kyary established her own label, KRK LAB, in partnership with Nippon Columbia in 2021, releasing her fifth studio album, ‘Candy Racer’, that October. The record introduced harder electronic and club-oriented sounds while retaining Nakata as her principal producer. Her tenth-anniversary celebrations continued into 2022 with an extensive Japanese tour and performances at California’s Coachella festival, where she closed the Gobi Stage on both weekends. She also returned to Europe, including a London performance at EartH, before embarking on further international dates in 2023. Her work has remained closely connected to fashion, advertising, and visual design, with longstanding collaborators including art director Steve Nakamura helping shape the imagery surrounding her releases.

After taking time away from music following the birth of her first child in 2024, Kyary returned in July 2025 with ‘KURU KURU HARAJUKU’, incorporating motherhood into the single’s artwork while revisiting the fashion culture that launched her career. She also performed at London’s Margins United festival that September. Her fifteenth anniversary in 2026 brought further releases, including the house-influenced ‘Focus Focus’ and the more romantic, synth-led ‘Tsukihime’, issued on the anniversary of her debut on 17th August. The celebrations culminated in PAMYU FES at Yokohama’s Pia Arena MM, a festival she organised featuring ATARASHII GAKKO!, FRUITS ZIPPER, Kaela Kimura, Kishidan, and MONGOL800. Her October single ‘Pang Pang Pang’ was selected as the ending theme for the anime Bread Thief. With a sixth studio album announced for January 2027 and a nationwide anniversary tour to follow, Kyary continues to develop the musical and visual identity that helped bring Harajuku pop culture to international audiences.
