Driven at a young age by a wide range of music from soul and jazz to classical, Makoto Shimizu is living proof of the incredible scope and power of electronic music, not only being Japan’s drum and bass ambassador, but also an international figurehead in the scene. Now, as part of his Spring European tour, Makoto will perform sets in Manchester, Bournemouth, and one of London’s hottest touring club nights, Hospitality.
Inspired to pursue a career in music after hearing academy award winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto‘s soundtrack for The Last Emperor, Makoto went on to major in Acoustic Engineering, later discovering drum and bass through UK based DJ Gilles Peterson and his radio shows on Kiss FM and BBC Radio 1. This led him to start experimenting with the genre, and soon caught the attention of pioneering DJ/producer LTJ Bukem who in 1999 signed him to his label Good Looking Records.
Since then Makoto has released three albums and has toured the world extensively with jam packed gigs across Asia, Europe, UK, and USA. In 2011 he started his own physical label Human Elements and sister digital label HE:Digital, providing an outlet for his own work as well as fellow DJs and producers Velocity, Heavy1, Ena, and Key MC.
Combining classic house and jazzy vibes, Makoto delivers some of the best sets Tokyo has to offer. Refined and full of soul, this is something you don’t want to miss out on.
