Alt rock group Luby Sparks have released the video for new single Depression.
The single marks a change of direction for the band, fitting right into the grunge revival that we’ve been seeing during these last few years. With screaming guitars, a heavy repeating bass-line, and distorted vocals, diving into a dreamy chorus, Depression just exudes 90’s throwback charm.
The video, directed by Takumi Gunji, also captures the grunge vibe, using grainy film aesthetics, fisheye lens, and quick cuts.
The group, based in Tokyo, is made up of Erika (vo), Natsuki (ba/vo), Sunao (gt), Tamio (gt), and Shin (dr). Luby Sparks formed in 2016 and released their debut album in January 2018 with original lead singer Emily. In March 2018 Erika joined as the band’s new vocalist. They have supported various overseas acts on tour in Japan including The Vaccines, and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. On February 19th 2022 they played an independent show with indie mainstays, and old friends, DYGL at Shibuya’s WWW X.
In an interview with Mikiki Tokyo bassist Natsuki Kato stated that due to the pandemic he was able to focus solely on music production and that a new album is already completed.
“I felt like I was free for two years. I was producing/recording songs for one of the two years, and for the other year I was actually doing post-recording mixes and post-production. In fact, we completed the new album scheduled to be released this year during that period.”
Luby Sparks will be joining psychedelic outfit BROTHER SUN SISTER MOON for a one-night show at Osaka’s SOCORE FACTORY on April 16th.
