Awich drops love letter to Okinawa in the form of new single ‘TSUBASA’

Japan’s latest rap phenomenon Awich released her new single TSUBASA on May 15th, the 50th anniversary of Okinawa being returned to Japan from the US.

Produced by BIGYUKI and arranged by frequent collaborator Chaki Zulu, the new track also features a guest performance from Awich’s daughter Yomi Jah.

In a post on her Instagram account, the Okinawa born artist explained the story behind the single’s creation.

“The elementary school my daughter, Yomi Jah, attended is next to the runway of the Futenma US military base. One day, a helicopter’s “window” fell from the sky into her school playground. This song started from there.

The song is for the strong children of Okinawa with big dreams while living in such a complicated environment. Telling them that they too someday fly like those planes, and be great. “

Okinawa, which was under American administration until 1972, is unlike the rest of Japan due to its unique mix of cultures. This has also spawned its own set of issues, and a large percentage of the island is still occupied by the US military today.
