UPDATE: NANA KITADE’s London show on April 26th has been cancelled.
Singer/songwriter and 2000s underground fashion icon NANA KITADE will perform in London this month as part of her Dive to the 20th Anniversary European tour.
Known for her sugary sweet pop sound, KITADE made her solo debut at just 16 years old with her 2003 single Kesenai Tsumi. The track quickly gained recognition abroad after being featured in the hit anime series Fullmetal Alchemist.
Around this time KITADE would also be hailed as a lolita fashion icon. The style became part of her stage persona, leading her to model for long-standing clothing brand Baby, The Stars Shine Bright.
Since then, KITADE has gone on to release 4 solo studio albums and, in the early 2010s, explored new sounds in numerous side projects.
In 2009 she joined guitarist TAIZO to form Loveless, which led to her first ever London live show in 2011. The duo became the first Japanese artists to perform on the African continent with their concert in Casablanca, Morocco.
She assembled the grunge outfit THE TEENAGE KISSERS who released their first and only album VIRGIN FIELD in 2014. Despite only lasting 4 years, the band managed to catch the attention of grunge royalty Courtney Love who contacted KITADE soon after the album’s release asking to go shopping together in Tokyo.
She also briefly performed alongside Kamikaze Girls author Novala Takemoto as part of the Japanoise unit NANANOVA.
KITADE returned to solo activities for the first time in 8 years with her 2017 moody pop album VIOLET BLAZE.
Her 2020 mini-album New Dawn saw her join the likes of Daiki Nakahata (Syrup16g) and KANSA (BRAZILIANSIZE) to stray away from the pop sounds of her past solo work, opting for noisier post-punk and shoegaze ballads.
The tour will serve as a chance to relive KITADE’s biggest hits of the last 20 years. Fans of the classics (especially the anime songs) won’t want to miss out.
