SOM4LI drop frosty prelude to upcoming EP ‘chachacha’

Tokyo-based indie rock five-piece SOM4LI are set to release their second EP, ‘chachacha’, on June 19th. This follows nearly 2 years after their first EP release, ‘ESCAPISM’.

In the run-up to the release, the group dropped the EP’s lead single, ‘frozen’, written and composed by guitarist Rio Shimamoto, who’s also a member of Strip Joint.

The new single marks a departure from SOM4LI’s typical indie rock sound by incorporating dance elements. The structure of ‘frozen’ resembles a movie, beginning with a cold atmospheric intro that builds towards a climactic onslaught of twinkling distorted guitar. Blending pop sensibilities with an unsettling, unpredictable feeling, this track has SOM4LI venturing into new territory.

Formed in 2021, SOM4LI have turned heads on the scene. Blending straightforward beats and noisy guitars with influences from the South London indie scene and US alternative music, they’ve created an experimental sound. Their creation has a unique balance with globally influenced sounds and up-front Japanese lyrics.

The EP ‘chachacha’ consists of four tracks, including the title track. Vocalist MAKO created the cover design. In addition to the EP release, SOM4LI will perform at the Tokyo SPREAD show on June 29th as part of the Kuang Program Japan Tour 2024, alongside Pot-Pourri and iVy.
