Japanese post-hardcore legends envy will release their 9th studio album, ‘Eunoia’, on October 11th. This album comes 4 years and 8 months after their previous release, ‘The Fallen Crimson’, marking their second album with the current lineup.
The album’s track list includes eight songs, such as ‘Piecemeal’, ‘Imagination and Creation’, and the lead single ‘Beyond the Raindrops’, which Envy released alongside the album announcement. This new track sees envy shift away from their usual intensity, replacing the screams with dreamy shoegaze tones.
Guitarist and co-founder Nobukata Kawai describes the track as one of the first songs written for the album. “I found a melodic, down-tuned riff and everything started from there”, he explains. The track almost didn’t make the album, but Kawai rediscovered the demo version during the final stages of recording preparations. “If I hadn’t listened to the demo that day, I don’t think this song would’ve been recorded!”
Vocalist Tetsuya Fukagawa added, “This song was a new challenge for me. Nobu sent the demo over at the last minute so I ended up writing the lyrics with a focus on sounds that fit the melody, rather than the meaning of the words. I think it ultimately gives the song something raw and honest that we’ve never explored as a band before”.
Discussing the album as a whole, Nobukata Kawai, explains:
“The concept of creating the album was to honestly face our own powerlessness. Searching for a little hope, and recording the emotions gained from daily life in a diary-like manner. Even without explaining the songs, Tetsu’s lyrics were wonderful and added depth to the piece. It has been six years since the member line-up changed, and the good relationship of trust has been strongly reflected in the work.”
Recorded and mixed by Takashi “Patch” Kitaguchi and mastered by Josh Bonati in New York City, Eunoia will be available on CD, LP, and digital platforms. North American listeners can pre-order the album through Temporary Residence Ltd, while European fans can purchase their copy from Pelagic Records.
