tomodati release MVs for ‘GRAVITY’ and ‘ZETSUBOFANCLUB’

tomodati have released 2 brand-new MVs within a week- ‘ZETSUBOFANCLUB ft. Kanamil’ and ‘GRAVITY’. They officially released both tracks in 2023 on their EP ‘I don’t wanna be xxx’.

‘ZETSUBOFANCLUB ft. Kanamil’ released on July 10th. It feels like an electronic rock-opera with different vibes throughout the song, from cutesy hyperpop, to rap, to distorted hard techno. The title itself means ‘despair fanclub’, giving a dark edge to a hype track. Notably, guest artist Kanamil was one of the original members of alternative j-pop outfit Oyasumi Hologram. The latest release on July 17th is ‘GRAVITY’. It’s a euphoric hyperpop track with trance elements, as well as distorted guitar adding an edge to the uplifting sounding song. Vocalist mutsuo nakamura handled writing duties for both songs.

The video for ‘ZETSUBOFANCLUB ft. Kanamil’ was directed by the group’s own VJ and vocalist sadakata. She has also previously worked with acts such as gato, 4s4ki, and CVLTE. The video matches the energy of the song title with the group walking and dancing around Shinjuku, known currently for its influx of depressed youths often found hanging out on the streets. ‘GRAVITY’ was directed by cinematographer Takumi Yamasaki (EYEZEN) who often works alongside sadakata, including on both of these releases. The video for ‘GRAVITY’ is a textural feast with different colours, lights, fabric and water giving a cool summer feel.

tomodati are a three-piece band made up of mutsuo nakamura (vo., DJ), sadakata (VJ, vo.), and Kenji Fujii (ba., synths). The group began in 2015 as vocalist nakamura’s solo project. He would post remixes of popular songs to YouTube, including tracks such as TM Network’s ‘Get Wild’, and Gotch’s ‘Taxi Driver’. Soon after joined sadakata and Fujii. The group draw inspiration from electro, house, and trap to create what they describe as ‘Tokyo future punk’. In 2019 the band released their self-titled 1st album. Additionally, sadakata provides colourful and stylish VJ work for the group’s live performances, often held in Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Roppongi. In 2023 tomodati released their latest EP ‘I don’t wanna be xxx’. The band also continue to produce remixes, including recent additions such as a psytrance remix of Yuki Chiba’s ‘Team Tomodachi’, and a rage beat remix of Nirvana’s classic ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’.
