YOASOBI debut animated music video for 2024 Olympic hit ‘Butai ni Tatte’

YOASOBI, the duo known for turning novels into pop hits, have released the music video for their new song, ‘Butai ni Tatte’ (‘Standing on Stage’), NHK’s sports theme for 2024.

The song first appeared during NHK’s broadcast of ‘The 108th Japan Athletics Championships ~Paris Olympic Team Qualifying Tournament~’ in June. Officially released on July 26th, it coincided with the start of NHK’s coverage of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and swiftly topped Billboard JAPAN’s download chart.

‘Butai ni Tatte’ is a guitar-driven rock anthem capturing athletes’ struggles, triumphs, and the excitement of facing a big stage. Directed by Margt from the creative unit PERIMETRON, the animated music video explores themes of perseverance and resilience. Multiple animators contributed their unique styles to depict various sports.

Commenting on the song, YOASOBI stated:

“This song is not only a cheer for athletes facing their matches but also reflects the shared emotions of anticipation and struggle before stepping onto a big stage, which resonates with us as artists as well.”

The song’s creation was a collaborative effort involving three manga artists—Taizan 5, Yuki Kirishima, and Hirusagari Haruno. Their sports-themed manga, published on Shueisha’s online manga platform ‘Shonen Jump+’, were then novelised by Jun Esaka, which in turn were used as the foundation of the song. All three novels have been published on YOASOBI’s official website—‘Hanareta Futari’, ‘Parallel Lane’, and ‘Owaranai Deuce’.

This Lollapalooza appearance is part of YOASOBI’s ongoing series of high-profile U.S. shows. Starting in 2023 at 88rising’s ‘HEAD IN THE CLOUDS’ in LA, they went on to perform at Coachella 2024, and hold their first round of sold-out headline shows on the West Coast. Tonight (August 6th), they will perform a sold-out solo concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York, followed by another sold-out show at MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston on August 8th.
