Awich drops theme for Netflix wrestling drama The Queen of Villains: ‘Are you serious?’

Okinawa-born rapper Awich has released her new single ‘Are you serious?’, the official theme song for Netflix’s upcoming series ‘The Queen of Villains’. Produced by Chaki Zulu, the track sets the tone for the five-episode drama, which will be released globally on September 19th.

‘The Queen of Villains’ tells the story of Dump Matsumoto, one of Japan’s most iconic female wrestlers from the 1980s. Portrayed by comedian Yuriyan Retriever, the series follows her journey from an aspiring wrestler to becoming one of the most infamous heels in Japanese pro-wrestling. Awich’s lyrics echo Matsumoto’s transformation, drawing parallels with the battles for resistance and survival in a male-dominated industry—challenges that Awich herself has faced in her music career.

This latest collaboration builds on Yuriyan Retriever and Awich’s work on the remix of her 2023 single ‘Bad Bitch Bigaku‘, which became one of her most popular tracks. In April, Awich and Yuriyan Retriever performed the remix live at Coachella 2024 during the ’88rising Futures’ set, alongside NENE (Yurufuwa Gang), LANA, and MaRI.

The series, written and produced by Osamu Suzuki and directed by Kazuya Shiraishi, provides an unflinching look at Matsumoto’s rise within the All Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling promotion. Co-stars include Erika Karata as Chigusa Nagayo and Ayame Gouriki as Lioness Asuka, the famed Crush Gals tag team with whom Matsumoto famously clashed.

Additionally, Awich released the music video for ‘Are you serious?’ on her official YouTube channel, featuring scenes from ‘The Queen of Villains’, including bloody bouts between the story’s key rivals.
