Okinawan rapper Awich and alt-rock group CVLTE have been tapped to provide the opening and ending themes for the second cour of Shangri-La Frontier season 2. Set to air in January 2025, this phase, titled the “Traveling Wolf, Be Ambitious” arc, continues the VR gaming saga. Awich contributes the opening track, ‘Frontiers’, while CVLTE deliver the ending theme, ‘realitYhurts.’.
Awich brings ‘Frontiers’ as the opening theme
Awich’s track ‘Frontiers’ draws on themes of growth and ambition, paralleling the anime’s focus on personal challenge and exploration. In a statement, Awich shared her perspective on the song’s connection to the series:
“The fearless determination of Sunraku and his companions to push forward mirrors my own approach to life as an artist. Within the song, there’s a question: “What you wanna be?”. This serves as a message encouraging listeners to ask themselves, “How will you carve out your own future?”.”
This collaboration follows Awich’s recent tie-in with the Netflix drama The Queen of Villains and adds to a string of milestones in recent years, including her Coachella debut in 2024, a landmark performance at Nippon Budokan, and the viral success of tracks like ‘Bad Bitch Bigaku’.
CVLTE’s first anime theme: ‘realitYhurts.’
CVLTE, who have built their reputation on a mash-up of alt-rock, electronic, and hip-hop, make their anime debut with ‘realitYhurts.’. The track leans into the escapist themes of Shangri-La Frontier, giving listeners a brief respite from reality. In a statement, the band described the song as:
“Our anthem for the virtual world. With this song, we aim to help you escape from reality, even if just for a little while.”
CVLTE’s contribution follows their 2024 album ‘DIGITAL PARANOIA 2052’, numerous collaborations with international artists, and major live appearances, including a set at Bring Me The Horizon’s NEX FEST in 2023. Earlier this month, they performed at REDLINE ALL THE FINAL, where Awich also took the stage.
