BABYMETAL unleash world-play filled 'Song 3' with Slaughter To Prevail

BABYMETAL unleash wordplay-filled ‘Song 3’ with Slaughter To Prevail

BABYMETAL have unveiled their hotly anticipated collaboration single with US-based Russian deathcore band Slaughter To Prevail, titled ‘Song 3’. The track dropped yesterday, May 28th, along with a music video.

‘Song 3’ has been hinted at for a while, with photos of BABYMETAL and Slaughter To Prevail together at festivals. Yesterday we finally got to see this long awaited collaboration. A particularly heavy outing for the trio, ‘Song 3’ features pummelling drums, screeching guitar, and Momometal’s death growls. The lyrics may seem nonsensical at first, but on closer inspection there’s a whole lot of wordplay at hand.

Phrases like “bari san”, meaning “3 bars”, is a slang term for full phone signal, while “jinsei bari san” gives a feeling of “living life to the max”. The pre-chorus features chanting of “ichi, ni, san, ichi, ni, san, ichi ni thunder”, with “thunder” sounding like “san da”. This also conjures the image of the late legendary wrestler Antonio Inoki, who would yell “ichi ni san da!” after winning his matches. Inoki also often sported a red scarf, and we see Su-metal placing a red towel around Slaughter To Prevail vocalist Alex Terrible’s neck after winning his fight in the video, further strengthening the link.

Additionally, Momometal features here as a main vocalist, further leaning into the “3” references. She is the third member of the group, and was born on March 3rd 2003. Fans have taken to forums and message boards to discuss other puns and plays in the song, including Momometal’s real first name having 3 syllables, the group having 3 members, the track having a true runtime of 3:33, and it being the third song on their upcoming album ‘METAL FORTH’.

The single has dropped during BABYMETAL’s first European arena tour, and ahead of their massive London tour final tomorrow, May 30th. In June, they will embark on their North America tour. ‘Song 3’ will feature on ‘METAL FORTH’, an album “created in collaboration with a new generation of friends encountered across the globe”. The album releases on June 27th, and celebrates 15 years of BABYMETAL.
