Concept idol group Candye♡Syrup have returned with a new music video titled ‘CAN DIE GAME!!’. This is their first release in over 5 years.
‘CAN DIE GAME!!’ is an alt-idol visual kei mashup. The group are part of the Harajuku-core genre, self described as “pikorimo idol”. The former is a portmanteau of “pika pika” (electronic) and “screamo” (itself already a portmanteau of “scream” and “emo”), and that sound rings out loud and clear here. Opening with an unassuming chip-tune melody, it quickly descends into full on metal territory with heavy guitars, and screamed lyrics, “CAN DIE DEATH GAME!”. The overall melody fits snugly into idol territory, with clean vocals from each member dominating the track.
The song features lyrics by IKU, hairdresser and owner of the Candye♡Syrup salon and concept café in Harajuku. Music, mixing, and mastering was handled by Kazumi, vocalist and composer of visual kei band RENGEKI.
Meanwhile, the video for ‘CAN DIE GAME!!’, sees the members performing in Candye♡Syrup itself, with insert shots of them in various situations including kissing scenes, eating and drinking together, taking pills, and sitting in a bath with cut wrists. It’s a colourful yet darkly tinged visual, leaning into the menhera-kei subculture. The video also serves as an introduction to the group’s new lineup.
Two members remain from the original lineup— 44-year old Ane Ageha model MiRichan (formerly known as Aisaki Mai), and 34-year old Naninune Non. Additionally, 4 brand new members have joined; Amamiya Lulu, Tennensui Yunochi, Hapi Loveli, and Rettousei Shigo. All 6 members work at Candye♡Syrup’s concept café of the same name.
Plus, the group’s signature self titled song ‘CandyeSyrup’ has received a re-release across streaming platforms. The single features the new lineup, new artwork, and updated production. As well as this, their first oneman live with this lineup will occur on September 21st at Shinjuku’s club SCIENCE. Notably, the group have no restrictions on photography or moshing at their events.
