Tokyo indie pop band Lamp have publicly addressed the unauthorised use of AI-altered versions of their album artwork, specifically their 2004 album ‘For Lovers’. The statement, posted to the band’s official Instagram on October 14th, received over 170,000 likes within days and has prompted widespread discussion among fans.
Accompanied by two images of the ‘For Lovers’ cover that had been extended using artificial intelligence, Lamp wrote:
“No AI-generated images, please. We are very saddened to see that recently, AI-generated images based on the cover of our work “For Lovers” are being treated as if they were the official artwork in various places.
We don’t want to spoil the joy of fans who are enjoying these images, but to be honest, every time we are asked to sign a print of one of these AI images, or see someone introducing us with such an image, we can’t help but feel disappointed. We would be truly grateful for your understanding.”
One of the images referenced in the post first appeared on Reddit in 2022, when a user expanded the ‘For Lovers’ artwork using OpenAI’s DALL·E 2. While guitarist Taiyo Someya acknowledged the fan-made image at the time, it has since been widely circulated online and, in some cases, mistaken for official material.
The image resurfaced during Lamp’s Future Behind Me – The Americas World Tour, which began on October 1st in Mexico City, prompting the band’s statement. Fans have reportedly brought AI-altered prints for the group to sign, raising concern among members about the misrepresentation of their work.
Lamp recently wrapped the Latin American leg of their Future Behind Me – The Americas World Tour on October 14th, and will begin the North American leg on October 18th at Toad’s Place in New Haven. Upcoming shows include Raleigh, Atlanta, and Toronto, along with a two-night run at the House of Blues Anaheim on November 6th and 7th. The tour concludes on November 28th at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City.
