Artists across Japan’s rock and visual kei community have posted messages in memory of LUNA SEA drummer Shinya, who died on February 17th 2026 at the age of 56.
Tributes have poured in from across Japan’s cultural landscape, with musicians, broadcasters and athletes alike acknowledging Shinya’s legacy. Performers who shared the stage at LUNATIC FEST. 2025 — Shinya’s final appearance with LUNA SEA — have also paid tribute.
Formed in Kanagawa in 1986, LUNA SEA are widely regarded as one of visual kei’s most influential bands, rising from the underground to arena-scale success through the 1990s before disbanding in 2000. After reunion shows at Tokyo Dome in 2007 and 2008, the group officially returned in 2010 and continued releasing new work, with the same five-member line-up in place from 1989 until Shinya’s death.

SUGIZO, who has played alongside Shinya in LUNA SEA since 1989 and knew him before the band formed, posted a brief message on social media. The pair were long-time friends, and had played together as teenagers in the power-metal group PINOCCHIO, with Shinya later urging SUGIZO to join the pre-LUNA SEA band Lunacy.
“Dear my Best Friend.
I am truly, truly lonely…”
INORAN posted his message on the morning of February 23rd, the opening night of his Determine 2026 tour. A co-founder of LUNA SEA, he wrote that Shinya “loved seeing everyone smile” and said he would carry that feeling onto the stage that night.
“Shin-chan loved seeing everyone smile, and he loved anything that was fun…
As for me, I will do what I need to do,
just as I always have.
At today’s live show, I will play with all my heart,
for Shin-chan,
and for all of you!”
GACKT, who toured Europe and Japan with Shinya as part of his band project YELLOW FRIED CHICKENz, shared a lengthy tribute alongside video footage and photos from their tours, performances and music videos together, recalling the intricacies of his playing and describing him as the “heart” of LUNA SEA.
“I was left speechless by the sudden news from SUGIZO. Shin-chan, it’s too soon. Far too soon…
The time I shared with you wasn’t long, but the time we exchanged sound together was without question extraordinary.
That overwhelming groove. The resolve that lived in every single strike.
When I stood on the same stage, I found myself deeply jealous that the members of LUNA SEA were able to experience that kind of reassurance all the time.
He was the kind of rare drummer whose presence alone could shift the center of gravity of the entire atmosphere.
He always gave those who exchanged sound with him a kind of exhilaration that only they could understand.
The drums are positioned at the back. But Shin-chan was always the band’s “heart”, the very center of the sound.
Fierce, powerful, and yet somehow warm. That sound will never fade.
The last time we exchanged words, he said, “I’m okay. I’ll do my best!”, just like the usual Shin-chan.
We can no longer see him play, but within the legend that is LUNA SEA, Shin-chan will continue to beat on forever.
With heartfelt respect and gratitude. Shin-chan, you fought hard. Truly, thank you for everything.
Of course, I understand how painful this is. But I want the fans to keep facing forward.
The members of LUNA SEA are surely suffering as well. Even so, they don’t want to make the fans worry, so they endure without voicing their weakness.
If we remain in sorrow forever, Shin-chan won’t be able to leave with peace of mind.
Shin-chan, truly, truly, thank you.”

シンちゃん、早いよ、早いって…。
ボクが共にした時間は短かったけれど、
音を交わした時間は間違いなく最高のものだった。
あの圧倒的なグルーヴ。
一打一打に宿る覚悟。

Jun-ji of SIAM SHADE, widely regarded as one of Shinya’s protégés, stepped in on drums for LUNA SEA at LUNATIC FEST. 2025 after Shinya was forced to withdraw following his brain tumour diagnosis. Long open about his admiration for Shinya as both mentor and senior, Jun-ji later revealed in a social media post that he was present at Shinya’s final moments.
“I was able to be there at Shinya-san’s final moments.
I also said my farewell at the wake.
I still haven’t been able to accept it as reality at all.
It’s just too painful…
But I have to do my job properly on stage…
Shinya-san would get mad at me otherwise…
Right now… I don’t really know how I feel.”
Elsewhere, tributes focused on Shinya’s character and what he meant to other musicians. SHAZNA’s IZAM remembered the period before the band’s major debut, saying Shinya was the first person they greeted upon joining their agency in 1996, and recalling how he celebrated their debut at midnight on August 27th 1997 in Osaka. “The days leading up to our debut were truly a continuous series of moments saved by Shinya-san’s kindness”, he wrote.
LM.C guitarist Aiji, who worked with Shinya during his time in PIERROT and later on LM.C recordings and shows, described him as an older brother figure who put younger bands at ease. “He always looked out for us juniors, trying to ease our nerves and make the atmosphere enjoyable on site”, Aiji wrote, adding that Shinya “led the band with the best groove… full of kindness and dependability, a truly great senior”.
Matenrou Opera drummer Hibiki Shiraishi said he had admired Shinya since his student days, recalling the impact of seeing him “powerfully play a flashy double bass drum kit”, and expressing regret that he never properly thanked him after participating in last year’s LUNA CHEE ‘ROSIER’ parody project.
Psycho le Cému vocalist DAISHI recalled the senior–junior relationship they shared after his band joined the same agency out of admiration for LUNA SEA. Looking back on trips they took together, he described once running naked into the snowy mountains to make Shinya laugh, adding that he still cannot forget the smile he saw that day.
XANVALA bassist 70. wrote that without LUNA SEA, “today’s visual kei scene would not exist,” adding that Shinya was the drummer of the band that changed his life.
Posts also came from lynch.’s Hazuki, ALICE NINE./A9 guitarist Hiroto, NoGoD’s Dancho, D vocalist Asagi, guitarist Kenichi (Kneuklid Romance), and new YELLOW FRIED CHICKENz drummer HIDEHIRO, many describing LUNA SEA as a formative influence and Shinya’s role as a respected senior within the community.
Shinya’s wife, former Morning Musume member Aya Ishiguro, also posted a statement on Instagram confirming that Shinya “passed away peacefully”, and thanked fans for their support. She asked fans to continue supporting LUNA SEA in line with what she described as his strongest wish.
“Even last year, when he suspended activities following the announcement of his brain tumor, Shinya’s greatest wish was that ‘LUNA SEA must never stop’.
I sincerely ask that you help carry on that wish by continuing to support the LUNA SEA that Shinya loved.”
LUNA SEA said in their original statement that they held a private funeral with close relatives and would announce details of a separate opportunity for fans to gather and pay their respects at a later date.
