MELT-BANANA will be returning to London for what might just be their only UK set of 2016 at Raw Power Festival this May, which will also play host to the piqnic, one of Japan’s freshest young talents.

The duo is legendary for their unorthodox punk songs and noisecore tunes that have kept them on top of the noise rock scene for decades. Being called one of the top live acts around on countless occasions, in 2014 they took the country by storm with their first set of balls to wall shows in four years, now they’ve been given the pinnacle Saturday headline slot of London’s best three day festival for all things psychedelic, electronic, and experimental.

This will also be their first show after their intensive 30+ date US tour with Napalm Death which kicks off on March 24th, so catch them while they’re fresh, this is going to be a riot.

the piqnic raw power festival 2016

the piqnic are the epitome of keeping under the radar. Touring Europe, including six UK shows, and releasing their debut album ZyouK all in 2015, this Shizuoka “dark shoegaze” troop have gone relatively unnoticed since forming in 2013, which is something that needs to change.

Stripping away the sunny side of the shoegaze genre, the piqnic add a shot of melancholy to the mix for a sound that, though heavily influenced by Japanese avant-garde, contains a hint of western indie, reminiscent to that of The Horrors and The Wytches.

These newcomers are a rare find. They’re chaotic in their execution, and maddeningly noisy, but the sombre tones make for an undoubtedly profound experience. Cram them onto an intimate London stage and we might just be in for one of the live highlights of 2016. If you’re big on acts like THE NOVEMBERS and Bo Ningen, the piqnic should be on your must watch list.
