IRORI Records artists comment on first UK shows at The Great Escape 2025: go!go!vanillas, Kroi, Ako, and Bialystocks

Following their double-bill at The Great Escape 2025, go!go!vanillas, Kroi, Ako, and Bialystocks, the four artists on the IRORI Records lineup, have shared their thoughts on performing in the UK for the first time. All emerging from Japan’s alt-rock and pop scenes, each brought their own style and perspective to Brighton, giving audiences a rare chance to see these acts in intimate venues, something increasingly uncommon on their home turf.

Speaking exclusively with Electric Bloom Webzine, each artist reflected on their first impressions of the UK and how those debut shows felt. Here’s what they had to say.

Ako

A self-produced singer-songwriter and visual artist, Ako has steadily built an audience in Japan since debuting in 2020 with a series of emotionally rich, self-directed releases. Her first UK shows stirred unexpected feelings of familiarity.

“My first performance in the UK was so much fun.

Everyone in the UK was so kind, which made it a joy to perform.
There’s something about the UK that feels a little like Japan—maybe a kind of shyness?

It’s hard to express in words, but the UK felt so comfortable that I even found myself thinking I’d like to live there.

I’ve always felt a certain elegance in music from the UK, and after visiting, I think I finally understand why.

I’d love to perform in the UK again.”

Ako kept things unhurried and close-range, letting her stripped-back arrangements unfold at their own pace. In Brighton, her sets pulled the room inward, holding attention with little more than a whisper and a chord.

Bialystocks

Brought together through a film project in 2019, Tokyo duo Bialystocks consists of vocalist and director Sora Hokimoto and pianist Go Kikuchi. They craft slow-building songs shaped by jazz phrasing and folk-rooted melodies, but it wasn’t just their sound that stuck in Brighton — it was the way UK audiences responded to it.

“We had the opportunity to perform at The Great Escape 2025 in Brighton, UK.

Perhaps it’s the deep-rooted spirit of rock in the UK, but what really stood out, not just at our show but also when watching plays and other performances, was how the audience genuinely enjoyed being in the moment together with the performers.

Seeing the audience bring energy and help transform the space together with the performers was incredibly inspiring.

Before our set, a young guy randomly came up and said, ‘Wear my sunglasses’. During the last song, I ended up putting them on—and at that moment, the whole crowd suddenly let out this mysterious cheer. That really stuck with me.

We’re truly grateful to everyone who came out to see our show. We’ll keep working hard and gaining experience so we can come back and perform in the UK again.”

Bialystocks opened Thursday’s Queens Hotel showcase with a set that leaned into space and subtlety, inviting the room into their pace rather than chasing it. On Friday at Casablanca, they loosened the edges, responding to the energy of a fuller crowd with a warmer, more fluid performance.

Kroi

With a catalogue that pulls from funk, hip-hop, R&B and soul, Kroi’s rhythm-forward approach and genre-crossing sets have made them a standout on Japan’s alternative live circuit. Their UK debut came with some uncertainty, but the response was immediate.

“Nice to meet you — we’re Kroi.

This was our very first performance in the UK.

To be honest, we’ve always felt that our music doesn’t contain many UK influences, so we weren’t sure at all how it would be received. Even so, we feel that we were able to give the audience who came a proper taste of a Kroi live show.

What stood out to us about the UK audience was how, even without knowing the language or hearing our music before, they still moved with the rhythm and really got into it.

The show was pure fun, and it made us genuinely want to come back and perform in the UK again.

Thank you so much for your continued support.”

Kroi live at The Queens Hotel, Brighton

Kroi were the final act on Thursday’s lineup at the Queens Hotel, where they leaned on earlier material like ‘Fire Brain’ and cut through the midday haze with a tightly delivered set that drew a strong response from a mostly unfamiliar crowd. Even without leaning into the sounds traditionally associated with UK indie, Kroi’s genre-crossing groove found plenty of takers.

go!go!vanillas

Formed in 2013, go!go!vanillas have become known in Japan for their high-tempo mix of garage rock, funk and retro-leaning pop. For frontman and songwriter Tatsuya Maki, their UK debut felt like a full-circle moment.

“Having started our rock band from listening to UK rock, performing at The Great Escape for our first-ever live show in the UK was an unbelievably joyful experience from beginning to end.

I mix elements of both Japanese and British music into go!go!vanillas’ songs. I’m confident that those songs really reached the rock DNA of the audience who came to see us this time.

After the show, many people came up to talk to us, asking, ‘When’s your next gig? Play again soon!’, that made us incredibly happy.

We definitely want to perform again in Brighton and throughout the UK very soon. Looking forward to seeing you again.”

go!go!vanillas live at Casablanca Jazz Club, Brighton

Their closing set at the Casablanca Jazz Club marked the pinnacle of their UK debut, drawing the biggest crowd reactions of the IRORI roster. A band that wears its UK rock influence proudly, go!go!vanillas treated their set as both homage and homecoming. Judging by the post-show conversations, the feeling was mutual.

Each act expressed interest in returning to the UK, and judging by the reception to IRORI Records’ showcases at The Great Escape, there’s a clear appetite for more. No dates are confirmed, but these first shows point toward a likely return.

Kroi
