KAIKA releases third single ‘Everyday Song’ – A meditation on identity

Virtual singer-songwriter KAIKA, an extension of the persona of popular virtual artist KAF, has released her third single, ‘Everyday Song’ (「ひぐらしのうた」), now available on all major streaming platforms.

Following her debut earlier this year, KAIKA continues to evolve artistically, weaving introspective lyrics with diverse vocal styles. Written entirely by KAIKA, ‘Everyday Song’ explores personal themes of identity and self-discovery, reflecting on the challenge of understanding oneself in a judgmental society. Her perspective transforms everyday moments into meaningful reflections on how those quiet instances help shape who we are.

KAIKA’s Comment on ‘Everyday Song’:

“There are often feelings you don’t understand at the time, only to later realize, “So that’s what I was thinking”, or “That’s what I wanted to say”. As you get older, it becomes harder to express emotions instinctively, and you become more skilled at using emotional “poses”, like unconsciously pulling from a stock of reactions—like, “this is how I act when I’m happy”.

But I wanted to remind myself that it’s okay not to rush to conclusions or force yourself to let go of those shapeless emotions swirling around in your heart, telling yourself, “That’s over now”, or “It’s too vague to matter”. If there’s something you can’t forgive, it’s okay to leave it unforgiven, and if you end up forgetting something, that’s fine too.

I hope this song can always be by your side during those moments when your heart feels tight or when you have sleepless nights.”

Musically, ‘Everyday Song’ highlights KAIKA’s vocal dexterity, moving seamlessly from rap-like delivery to soft, hushed tones, before reaching powerful heights. This fluidity mirrors the emotional range of the track, allowing KAIKA to convey both vulnerability and strength.

A music video starring Mauna Inage has been released alongside the track. Directed by Ū-ki Yamato, known for her work with RADWIMPS, Nogizaka46, and DAOKO, the video follows a high school student struggling to uncover their true identity, using visual metaphors to depict the challenge of self-discovery in a fast-paced, image-conscious world.

Director Ū-ki Yamato’s Comment:

“My assignment this summer was to create visuals that would best match the song in which KAIKA projects her soul.

I was filled with the desire to capture scenes that would blend KAIKA’s trembling voice, her words of resignation, and her unwavering melody, like beams of light swirling together, and to depict those moments expanding like overtones.

On a truly scorching midsummer day, it felt as if we were celebrating the life of the protagonist. Everyone brought their one-of-a-kind bodies and hearts together, and as the director, I feel fortunate to have preserved this video.

KAIKA, thank you for capturing such a precious season in your song, and for your courage.”

KAIKA made her debut as an extension of KAF’s artistic identity during KAF’s 4th one-man live show at Tokyo’s Yoyogi National Gymnasium in January 2024. Since then, KAIKA has used this project to explore raw emotional themes, with her earlier singles, ‘Kaika’ and ‘Teddy Bear’, introducing fans to her deeply introspective style.
