Okinawan born rapper Awich has released her 4th studio album and major label debut Queendom.
The 12 track album features a slew of all-new songs as well as hit song GILA GILA featuring JP THE WAVY and YZERR, and ANARCHY collaboration track Yacchimaina.
The title song is a heavy and emotional hip-hop track using her own life experiences in Japan and the US. Awich talks about the difficulties she has faced, from wishing to leave Okinawa, the incarceration and later murder of her husband in the US, to being a single mother. However, whilst the track serves as a reminder for the things she has gone through, it is far from hopeless. Awich reminds us that she is strong, and that “This is my Queendom”.
Awich, exposed to American culture from a young age due to being raised in Okinawa, cites Tupac as one of her major idols and credits him with helping her learn English. She moved to the US at 19, completed a degree in business and marketing, and after the loss of her husband moved back to Japan with her daughter. In 2019 she was featured in the 88rising documentary Asia Rising: The Next Generation of Hip Hop alongside artists such as Joji, Rich Brian, and ANARCHY. She made her major debut on Universal Music in July 2020.
Awich will be performing at the famous Budokan on Monday March 14th, joined by guests including ANARCHY, JP THE WAVY, and many others.
