f5ve embrace Japanese subcultures with new single ‘Underground’

Tokyo-based girl group f5ve celebrate Japan’s eclectic world of underground subcultures with their latest single, ‘Underground’. Released on July 12th, the energetic hyperpop club banger marks the group’s second single since their rebrand earlier this year.

‘Underground’, produced by BloodPop® and Count Baldor, adds a new edge to f5ve’s sound by merging elements of J-pop, hardcore, trance, and hyperpop. The song invites listeners to find freedom from day-to-day pressures by going underground and embracing their true selves away from societal constraints.

The music video has garnered attention for its unique visuals and choreography. The visuals and choreography, inspired by Japanese subcultures and trends such as parapara, dekotora (decorated trucks), and street racing, highlight the country’s iconic underground scenes.

f5ve, formerly known as SG5, consists of KAEDE, SAYAKA, RURI, MIYUU, and RUI. The group, which rebranded in April 2024, aim to dispel self-doubt and negative energy through their music. Their executive producer, BloodPop®, is known for his work with international stars such as Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, as well as prominent Japanese pop artists like Arashi and Rina Sawayama.

The single ‘Underground’ follows their May release, ‘Lettuce’, and continues to showcase the group’s evolving sound and dynamic performance style. With plans for global expansion, f5ve are set to take on audiences both in Japan and internationally.
