DIVERS CROIX turn a “LOST CHILD” in a home improvement store into a VK epic

90s visual kei revivalist comedy band DIVERS CROIX (also known as Kanari Tanbi) have unveiled their latest video ‘LOST CHILD’. The track comes from their 2nd album ‘1-nensei ya 2-nensei no aisatsu’ (‘1st and 2nd Graders Greeting Cheerfully’) which dropped on November 13th.

On first inspection, particularly to non-Japanese speakers, DIVERS CROIX may seem like a normal indie visual kei band. However, paying attention to the lyrics you’ll find they’re a comedy band, full of deadpan deliveries from frontman, comedian and singer tink (Tinkerbell Hatsuno).

‘LOST CHILD’ is no different. A seemingly bleak and sad song about a child without parents, it soon becomes apparent the child is just lost in a Cainz Home store. Comparing the size of the Japanese chain of home improvement stores to Hogwarts, tink continues singing with sincerity. The video, directed by Takuhiro Narita, also feels serious, with fans commenting that the video is too good for such a silly song.

Additionally, the band dropped their 2nd full length album on November 13th. ‘1-nensei ya 2-nensei no aisatsu’ features 11 tracks, and is available in 2 versions. The limited first edition features a booklet and random member photocard. This latest LP is “recommended for those who spent their youth as bangya”. The band also released official English translations of the song titles, which includes ‘Tsunaga reta nō to senro to iu na no ori to aka’ (‘A chained brain, a cage called a railroad track, and red’) being simply translated to ‘Thomas’. Another translates to ‘Wiping my body with sweat wipes made it feel like winter had come‘, which notably, the band also released a limited amount of “Winter is coming sheets” as an album bonus.

Plus, on November 23rd, DIVERS CROIX will hold their sold-out 4th oneman live at Tokyo Kinema Club. True to DIVERS CROIX, the live title is also absurd; ‘Kuruma no ue ni sunobo toka sāfin no ita o nokke rareru yō ni shite aru kuruma’ (‘A car that can carry a snowboard or surfboard on top’). For those who can’t attend in person, the show will be streamed live on Nico Nico, with tickets available here (Nico Nico account required). If you can’t wait, the band have also uploaded the full video of their debut live on their YouTube channel.

About DIVERS CROIX

DIVERS CROIX were formed in 2020 as an April Fool’s joke by comedian and singer Tinkerbell Hatsuno. The band touted themselves as a “90s visual kei revival band”, and aimed to “produce half-fake, half-true artists”. Their sound is 90s visual rock to a tee, paired with absurdist lyrics about distinctly non-VK things. However, despite initially starting as a joke, the band proved so popular that they decided to continue and become a “real band”. 2022 saw the band join BugLug’s festival ‘Bug Summit’, and in 2023 they released their first album ‘Sukoshi ookii koe’. This year saw them join Leetspeak monsters at their annual Halloween Party alongside acts such as XANVALA and Luv PARADE. DIVERS CROIX are tink (vo.), tacato (gt.), kikato (gt.), misuji (ba.), and dagaki (dr.).
